Why now? Do I really have to start thinking about this yet? The answer is yes. Right now. Right this second. Take a moment and imagine your 80-year-old self and ask yourself, “Can I afford to do anything right now?” The best thing to start looking at is a 401(k). What is a 401(k) you ask? Most people that have jobs have this benefit through their job. The reason you should start as soon as possible is because you’ll start saving up a lot of money. Since this money is going to be sitting in the bank for a while, it’s going to compound over the years, and slowly but surely grow. It’s a good idea to start an IRA, or an individual retirement account, because the sooner you start putting away portions of your paycheck each month, the sooner you will find yourself playing golf every afternoon with your friends and sipping mimosas on the beach.
